What happened to the art of the Russian Avant Garde when their usefulness to the USSR was superseded by Social Realism?

This edited version to the introduction of the 1983 Russian Avant Garde Exhibition in Stockholm is taken from a (rare) catalogue produced by the Stockholm Modern Museum of Art Exhibition. The catalogue is 315 pages of the incredible RAG collection of a visionary collector,George Costakis. The introduction has been edited and translated by painters TUBES magazines and translated by Marianne Arnberg. The catalogues has selected pages which accompany the detailed introduction which was written by Angelica Zander Rudenstine, the renown writer, art historian and Curator.

When the Russian October revolution broke out in 1917 the Costakis family like so many Greeks stayed in Moscow. They were not followers of the Bolshevism. As devout Christians of the Greek-orthodox church, it would have seemed more natural for them to oppose it for religious reasons. Neither did they, like many others, expect it to last, but as time went on and their expectations (of the future) were betrayed they conformed to their new situation…
